Disney Talks ‘Cruella’ Sequel Before Film Hits Second Week In Theaters

The movie studio wants to make life a little more Cruella

Hide the puppies; she’s coming back. Cruella opened in theaters and on Disney+ through Premier Access on May 28. And now, not even two weeks after its release, the smash hit Cruella is already in development for a sequel, reports People. The Emma Stone-led film follows the title character’s origin story decades before she spread havoc in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians animated movie.

“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson confirmed to People. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, […] ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

Fans are stoked.

As reported by People, director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara plan to return to the project. And in an interview with Collider, Gillespie let slip that he wasn’t finished telling the villainess’ story.

“I feel like we’ve only just met her,” the director admitted. “I’d love to now see the full-blown Cruella, fully loaded. She’s managed to get the support system around her and she can really expand on her brand. I’d love to see where that takes her and how you could almost destroy her from inside out, if she’s not careful with all that power.”

A Cruella fan loved the idea of getting to see more of the character.

When asked if he was interested in returning to direct a potential sequel, Gillespie told Collider that he would “if it was with this gang.”

“It was such a joy to work with everybody, and Tony writing it, and Disney was so supportive. They really fostered a feeling of safety where we could just really go for it without the repercussions,” Gillespie said. “We all were pushing it all the time and thinking, ‘I don’t know if Disney’s gonna be okay with this,’ but they would always call and be okay.”

The movie, which currently sits at a respectable 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, received generally positive reviews. “Emma Stone stars in the film that feels fresher than most recent Disney live-action efforts,” writes A.O. Scott from The New York Times.

A Google reviewer was similarly impressed. “I can’t say enough good things about this movie,” the fan’s review began. ”The acting is incredible. I wasn’t sure how Emma Stone would be as a villain but she absolutely killed it. Also, I loved her accent. Emma Thompson was amazing as well. This movie has similar elements to a Disney take on The Devil Wears Prada, but not too much.”

Cruella will be available to all Disney+ subscribers on Aug. 27. A release date for the sequel has not been determined.
