Are you craving Asian food? Whether you’re dreaming of traveling East Asia (and sampling the delicious food!), or you just want to try something new, tofu and teriyaki go together like peanuts and butter.

Tofu has been a staple of Asian cuisine for centuries, so it’s only natural that this combination is one of the easiest and tastiest ways to make tofu. This teriyaki tofu recipe will show you exactly how to replicate this Japanese dish!

This recipe is effortless to make, and while it may require some ingredients from Asian specialty stores (such as sake and rice vinegar), you’ll only use a little of each, and you can keep the remainder in your cupboard to use for other recipes. You could make teriyaki tofu as an easy weeknight dinner, or for a dinner party with other East Asian dishes.

Ingredients

  • One package of firm tofu. This should be drained and lightly pressed.
  • 2 tablespoons of oil, ideally an oil with high flashpoint, like canola
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of sake. This is a Japanese rice wine. If you don’t have sake, you can use dry vermouth.
  • 1/2 of an onion, chopped finely.
  • 1 pepper, chopped into small slices.
  • A few mushrooms, chopped into slices.
  • A handful of beansprouts.
  • Chopped spring onion
  • Chopped cilantro

Directions

  1. Lightly press the silken tofu to get rid of the excess water.
  2. Cut the tofu into cube shapes, of an inch in diameter.
  3. Put a skillet on a high heat with the oil. Once the oil is heated up, place some of the tofu into the skillet.
  4. The tofu should only take up one layer, so you may need to do this in batches if your skillet is small.
  5. Cook the tofu pieces each side for 2-3 minutes until they are both golden. Then move the cubes to a plate lined with a paper towel.
  6. Move the heat of the skillet to medium level. Then, pour over the soy sauce, sugar, sake, and rice vinegar into the pan. Make sure that they are combined thoroughly.
  7. Then add the red onion, pepper, beansprouts, and mushrooms. You can add any other vegetables that you see fit, and substitute them for ingredients that you don’t like! Cook the vegetables in the sauce until they are as you desire – this may be soft, or still a bit crunchy.
  8. Put the tofu back into the sauce and heat through. Then, remove the pan from the heat and serve.
  9. Separate the dish into bowls, each with a bed of rice.
  10. Sprinkle cilantro and spring onion onto the mixture and serve!

Do I need a tofu press for this recipe?

This tofu only needs to be lightly pressed, so not all moisture needs to be squeezed out. You could make this recipe by just drying the tofu with a dishtowel. However, to get the best results, we recommend that you use a tofu press to press it lightly, as this will help the tofu absorb the teriyaki flavors much better.

Which tofu should I use?

For this recipe, you want firm tofu to get the right texture. Extra tofu may be a bit too tough for this specific dish, and soft or silken tofu is best for blending.

Is teriyaki tofu healthy?

This dish is high-protein and low fat, so it will keep you full without being too heavy. It does have some sugar in it – if you are eating a low sugar diet, you could try halving the sugar content or adding a syrup in its place. It also has some oil, so opt for healthier varieties, like olive oil or flax oil, if you want the teriyaki to be a little more nutritious.
